GOP lawmakers are pressing Trump to make changes to the tax plan to keep millions of seniors from losing their Medicare coverage.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said on CNN Tuesday that the GOP tax plan “has to include some kind of change” that would allow people to keep their Medicare benefits if they make up the difference by purchasing a new policy.
“It’s very clear that we’re in a situation where it is going to be hard for millions of people to have their Medicare [benefits] eliminated,” Rubio said.
“I don’t think it is a good idea for people who are older to have to buy a policy that’s going to keep them insured for a very long time.
So we have to do something to keep people insured for as long as we possibly can.”
Sen. Bob Corker (R.
Tenn.) said Trump needs to provide more details about the plan and the impact it would have on Medicare coverage if the GOP bill is passed.
“We’re in this position now where we’re trying to do some sort of a transition and then come back to a legislative process to find the best way to move forward on this issue,” Corker said.
Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee have also expressed concern that the tax bill would lead to a dramatic increase in premiums for seniors.
